What AT&T doesn't put on the comparison page

×Speed reduced after 2GB/day
Day Pass says "unlimited" but after 2GB in 24 hours, speeds drop to 256kbps. Slower than home DSL in 2003.
×$2.05/MB pay-per-use
Skip Day Pass enrollment and your phone roams anyway? You pay $2.05 per megabyte. A 10-minute Maps session costs $30+.
×Any usage triggers the full day
One iMessage fallback, one background app sync, or picking up a call triggers the full $12 for 24 hours.
×No prorating, no refunds
A 30-minute layover with data on means a full $12 Day Pass charge. AT&T does not prorate.
×Monthly billing cap of $120
AT&T caps Day Pass charges at $120 per month per line (10 days). After the cap, roaming is included for the rest of the billing cycle — but $120 is still far more than a travel eSIM for the same trip.

How to avoid AT&T roaming charges

  1. 1
Put your phone in airplane mode before takeoff.
Prevents auto-enrollment in AT&T roaming passes.
  2. 2
Buy a travel eSIM for your destination ($7-15 typically).
Travel eSIM providers (Airalo, HelloRoam, Saily) sell pre-purchased plans with QR-code activation.
  3. 3
Install the eSIM and label it.
Install in airplane mode. Label the line "Travel — data only." Keep your AT&T line for SMS.
  4. 4
Enable the eSIM line for data after landing.
Switch default data to the eSIM. Leave AT&T off for data, on for incoming SMS and calls.
  5. 5
    Back home: switch data back.
Return to AT&T for data. The eSIM stays available for your next trip.

FAQ

Common AT&T roaming questions

Will AT&T auto-enroll me in Day Pass?

If you opted in (default for many postpaid lines), any data, voice, or SMS abroad triggers the $12 daily charge. Check your line settings before you travel.

Does Day Pass work in every country?

AT&T Day Pass covers 210+ destinations. A few countries like Cuba are pay-per-use only.

Can I cancel Day Pass during my trip?

Yes, by calling AT&T support. Only future days get cancelled, and you risk pay-per-use rates if your phone roams afterwards.

Is AT&T Passport still available?

No. AT&T retired the Passport plan on August 12, 2021. International Day Pass at $12/day is the current option. A travel eSIM still beats both on price.

Does AT&T 5G include international roaming?

5G plans use the same Day Pass pricing. There is no included international roaming. Free roaming is a T-Mobile feature, not AT&T.

Does AT&T charge extra for Mexico and Canada?

No. AT&T includes Mexico and Canada roaming at no extra charge on all unlimited plans. Calls, texts, and data to and from Mexico and Canada are included at no additional cost — no Day Pass required.

Can I use my AT&T phone with an eSIM?

Yes. eSIMs work alongside your AT&T line without unlocking. Only physical SIM swaps require an unlock.
